Maintenance of silver jewelry

Silver is a living material that changes over time. With proper care, your jewelry will last for generations.

Daily use

  • Wear your jewelry often – natural oils from your skin help maintain its shine.
  • Remove the jewelry before showering, bathing or swimming.
  • Avoid contact with perfume, hairspray, cream and cosmetics
  • Remove the jewelry before physical activity, sports or heavy work.
  • Avoid contact with chemicals, chlorine water and strong cleaning agents.

Tanning

Silver naturally tarnishes when exposed to air and moisture. This is normal and can be easily removed.

How to remove tarnish:

  • Use a silver polishing cloth or soft cloth
  • Rub gently in one direction (not circular motions)
  • For heavier tarnishing, use silver polish or silver bath
  • Rinse thoroughly with water and dry with a soft cloth.

NOTE: If the jewelry has enamel, avoid silver polishing on the enameled areas.

Cleaning

  • Clean your jewelry regularly with lukewarm water and mild soap.
  • Use a soft tan brush to reach into details and patterns
  • Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth.
  • Avoid ultrasonic cleaners for jewelry with enamel or loose stones.

Storage

  • Store your jewelry in a dry, dark place.
  • Feel free to use an airtight bag or jewelry box.
  • Place a piece of chalk or silica gel in the box to absorb moisture.
  • Store your jewelry separately to avoid scratches.

Patina and tool marks

Lofoten Jewelry often has a natural patina and visible tool marks. This is part of the handmade look and should not be removed.

If you want to preserve the patina in the recesses, only wash the surface gently and avoid sanding the recesses.
